Job summary

The Royal United Hospital in Bath is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to manage and lead our Imaging Physics Group. The group consists of three sections - Diagnostic Radiology Physics, Nuclear Medicine (including PET-CT) and Clinical Measurement (including Dexa and microvascular imaging) - providing a range of high quality, expert medical physics services to the Trust and external partners as well as our own clinical services. It is an integral part of the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, alongside two other groups - Radiotherapy Physics and Clinical Engineering.

The Imaging Physics Group is a friendly and enthusiastic team of clinical scientists, clinical technologists, nurse specialists and administrators. It includes and is highly committed to supporting both scientist and technologist trainees via the NHS STP scheme and a level 6 technologist apprenticeship program. The vital importance of research, development and innovation and pursues is recognised and there is active involvement in clinical trials and various research projects both internally and with external partners.

This is an exciting time to join the department with expanding services and having moved into a brand new purpose built cancer centre. There are also lots of opportunities for development including management apprenticeship programmes, teaching and research.

Main duties of the job

You will provide scientific leadership and direction to the Imaging Physics Group, and also contribute to the management of the wider department as a member of the Medical Physics and Bioengineering senior management team. You will be an effective communicator and an inspiring leader, able to develop the teams and the services.

The role requires detailed scientific knowledge and technical expertise in radiation physics and dosimetry and its application to healthcare, and you will provide advice at the highest level within the trust on the management of radiation protection, acting in an expert advisory capacity (RPA, RWA and/or MPE).

You will also be responsible for ensuring that appropriate training in radiation safety is provided for Trust staff in line with Trust policy and legislation.

  • Good honours degree in Physics
  • Approved MSc or higher degree
  • Certification as a qualified radiation expert (RPA, RWA and/or MPE)
