Biochemistry Biomedical Scientist
Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust
The closing date is 28 April 2025
Job summary
We are looking for someone who is keen to join the friendly and professional laboratory team as a band 5 BMS. The successful candidate will be expected to have technical knowledge commensurate with this grade but also be able to maintain and progress quality initiatives with a flexible and innovative approach. We are looking for people who work well within a team and have a patient focused attitude.
The Trust supports professional and personal development through experiential learning and both internal and external courses. A CPD programme is run within the laboratory with speakers from outside and within. Learning resources are available on line and via the trust library.
The Biochemistry Department has a Beckman based Automation section (3 x AU5800, 2 x DXI, Automate and DXA pre/post-analytical systems), Sebia electrophoresis equipment (CZE) and POCT involvement across the Trust. The IT systems used at the RUH are Cirdan Ultra LIMS, Sunquest ICE, Cerner Millennium and QPulse quality management software.
The pathology workload is relatively high as we provide pathology services not only to the trust but a wide rural GP catchment area and several community hospitals, both NHS and private.
The Biochemistry department processes a high workload (around 4,000 requests per day or 7m tests per year) most of which is performed on Beckman analysers with stand-alone and tracked robotics. We moved into a new purpose built laboratory in 2014.
Main duties of the job
- Work within operating procedures and protocols.
- As a technically qualified member of the department, will carry out appropriate technical and analytical roles and support the non-technical and management elements of the department.
- Take specific responsibility for the day to day operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Ensure compliance with the Department Health and Safety regulations.
- Those who satisfy competency assessments will work as a practitioner to provide a 24-hour laboratory medicine service for the Trust.
- Support will be provided by a senior member of staff out of hours.
