Job summary

The plaster room provides a comprehensive Orthopaedic and Trauma plaster service for Fracture and Orthopaedic clinics, Outpatients, Complex casts and advisory support to Accident & Emergency department, Orthopaedic (adult and children) Theatres, Diabetic foot clinic and Paediatric Physiotherapist.

The post holder needs to be professionally accountable and to work according to the (AOP) Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners Code of Professional Practice.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide relevant verbal and written information to patients and carers for example plaster aftercare leaflets to patients and relatives.
  • Ensure that a comprehensive plaster service is provided to meet the needs of patients throughout the fracture/orthopaedic clinics and wards to include:
  • Application of back slabs for patients with simple and complicated fractures..
  • Application and removal of routine casts from the fracture and orthopaedic clinics.
  • Application and removal of specialist casting for:
  • Cast brace for upper and lower limb.
  • Body cast for children to include Hip and Shoulder spica casts
  • Making of and adapting and applying specialist braces.
  • Wedging of casts for the realignment of bones.
  • Assist in the manipulation of fractures under local anaesthetic prior and during cast application.
  • To be an active participant in teaching and facilitating the education of staff in the In-house plaster training course.
  • Reviewing practice and implementing appropriate changes based on research/best practice;
  • Developing and implementing Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiative
  • To support senior technicians in the teaching of less experienced staff and other allied healthcare professionals in casting.
  • To work within the outpatient department when required, assisting with the running of clinics, calling in patients, notes preparation etc.
  • To promote and maintain effective communication.
