Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a clinical fellow to join our Intensive Care team. The RUH ICU admits approximately 1000 patients per year with 85% as emergencies, including critically unwell children.
Our patient cohort is a 60% medical - 40% surgical split with a mean age of 61, average length of stay 2.7 days and a standardised mortality ratio of 0.93 (meaning that more of our patients survive compared to similar sized units).
In December 2024 we move to a brand-new ward, B36, which has a 16 bed capacity across a number of negative, neutral and positive pressure ventilated rooms. The new ward will offer excellent facilities for both patients, their relatives and staff, with increased numbers of spaces to work and rest compared to our current unit.
Day shifts are staffed by 2 consultants and 3 resident doctors (2 SHO, 1 Middle Grade) as a minimum, 7 days a week. We offer multiple training opportunities throughout the week including radiology meetings, ICU follow up clinic and FUSIC club. Management / leadership opportunities are offered to our more senior trainees. Our monthly journal club, M&M and clinical governance sessions are a good learning opportunities for doctors in training. We have a strong track record in research and quality improvement with several professors working in the department.
Main duties of the job
You will work on our middle grade rota.
A minimum of 1 day a week will be protected echocardiography training, supervised by the echocardiography department. This will include supervised echocardiography clinics.
BSE ACCE or EDEC accreditation will be supported.
Appropriate time will be given to take an active part in echocardiography clinical governance and to attend echocardiography department meetings.
You will have access to appropriate and high quality platforms to enable practice of echocardiography skills in the critical care environment.
You will support the FUSIC training offered in our department.
