Job summary
The post holder will support the Systems Team by providing professional expertise which ensures work packages and business as usual tasks are delivered effectively. They will also take the lead in planning and managing their successful delivery. This is a SQL Server database administrator role responsible for providing operational database services to the organisation. Some of the responsibilities of this role will include owning, tracking and resolving database related incidents and requests, fulfilling requests and resolving incidents within agreed timescales, reviewing service related reports (e.g. database backups, maintenance, monitoring) on a daily basis to ensure service related issues are identified and resolved within established timescales, responding to database related alerts and escalations and working with database engineering to come up with strategic solutions to recurring problems.
The Senior Database Administrator role requires a service-oriented focus, a strong sense of ownership of the problems and requests assigned and attention to detail when managing and resolving issues within the agreed timescales. Key to this role is establishing and maintaining communication with the System Teams colleagues and customers to keep them updated with status of their requests or raised issues. The role holder will proactively escalate any issues that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes.
Main duties of the job
- Monitor the Trust's SQL Server estate using database management system software and through custom daily checks to assure the server health
- Monitor the performance of databases and services ensuring their contribution to business performance is maintained.
- Benchmark processes to ascertain performance metrics for the SQL Server estate and instigate investigations when performance is inadequate.
- Identify and provide solutions for any processes which are causing bottlenecks.
- Ensure that the SQL Server estate is secure and work alongside the Trusts IG and cyber leads to maintain compliance with these policy areas.
- Carry out routine configuration/installation and reconfiguration of database and related products using defined operational procedures.
- Follow and refining procedures that contribute to the day to day management of the SQL Server estate, including:
- Checking backups and consistency checks are made
- Maintaining the security, access control and connectivity to the
- Ready disaster recovery procedures and schedule in DR exercises.
- Take a lead in the upgrade to the latest safe versions of Microsoft SQL Server & ensure patches are applied
- Make key decisions on Microsoft SQL Server settings for the Data Warehouse server such as database & log file sizes and locations, memory allocation and partitioning
- To be subject matter expert on matters concerning the Trust's SQL Estate and Microsoft SQL Server.
