Quality Improvement and Same Day Emergency Care-Surgical Fellow -CT1-2

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

Applications are invited for a Quality Improvement Fellowship in Emergency Surgery and Same Day Emergency Care (CT1/CT2 level). The post will run up from September 2024 to August 2025.

The post is based at the Royal United Hospitals Foundation Trust, Bath, and is suitable for candidates who have at least completed their Foundation Years' experience and would like to build on their experience of Laparoscopic and Emergency General Surgery. The successful applicant will receive training in Quality Improvement and dedicated protected time with a named QI mentor to undertake a Quality Improvement project. It is an ideal post for candidates who want to build upon their operative logbook and portfolio. The candidate will be supported to produce publications as well as gain experience in teaching juniors. The Fellow will have direct access to the nationally pioneering Emergency Surgery Ambulatory Care (ESAC) and theatre lists for one to one teaching.

With the reduction in training numbers nationally, we envisage that many able doctors will seek an alternative training route in active departments such as the RUH, and we have already demonstrated a long-term commitment to training and career progression of our Trust appointed doctors.

For further details please contact Mr Matthew Doe (matthewdoe@nhs.net) - consultant upper GI surgeon and specialty tutor.

Main duties of the job

The post will enable the trainee to build on their Foundation Programme experience and obtain appropriate competencies for the CT1/CT2 year but the post is not recognized by the Deanery for training. The RUH in Bath is a busy District General Hospital and previous CTs have been able to significantly improve their surgical experience and enhance their logbooks. The Department of Surgery is proud of its 100% success rate at ST3 application over the last few years. Educational supervision will be available to support the candidate.

ESAC in Bath has recently received excellent training reviews and now has a national profile. The successful applicant will be encouraged to support further developments in ambulatory care and support learning for other Trusts and the NHS as a whole. The department and the hospital provide a progressive and friendly atmosphere in which to work, and there is an active postgraduate teaching programme.
