Job summary

We are looking for a Clinical Simulation Fellow (CT or ST level) in Emergency Medicine from 7th August 2024 -5th August 2025. This combined post will enable the development of both clinical expertise as well as a specialist interest in simulation training for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. The ED is lead by 7 WTE Emergency Consultants and sees approximately 70000 new patients a year. The postholder will spend 1/3 of their time sharing the ED middle grade rota with 5 ST4-6 and 3 staff grade doctors, supervising 13 F2 - ST3. During their teaching role the postholder will work alongside 10 undergraduate clinical teaching fellows as well as the simulation team. Support and training will be provided to develop key skills in developing and delivering simulation based education. There will be expectation of participation in project work and encouragement and practical help to produce a poster presentation or publication. Support and opportunities will also be provided to help the postholders develop key management skills which are important for the future Consultant role.

Main duties of the job

While undertaking clinical duties the fellow will be expected to work with the Consultants in direct patient management and oversee the work of the junior medical staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners. The fellow will be expected to manage the range of patients attending all areas of the department, inclusive of taking a lead role in the care of patients requiring resuscitation. When working within the educational centre the fellow will be expected to contribute to the running of the centre on a day to day basis working closely with the established simulation team. The fellow will be expected to develop the capability to work without supervision in simulation but will be fully supported as they develop this skill. They will be expected to develop an understanding of all modes of simulation including human patient simulation and its practical application. They will be encouraged to continue developing and implementing a range of simulation training for undergraduate medical students and will be supported in facilitating interdisciplinary undergraduate training. The fellow will also work alongside the medical and nursing leads as simulation training is implemented across the trust as part of the RUHs patient safety strategy.

The Emergency Department operates a full shift system. All shifts are between 8 and 11 hours long.
