Job summary

Here at the Royal United Hospitals, Bath we work very hard managing and collecting a combined figure of around 1300 tonnes a year of, clinical waste, offensive waste, general waste, recyclable waste and other waste streams. We recycle where we can, and take the business of managing waste on site very seriously; we are very proud of our small in house team who cover 365 days of the year making sure the site is clear of waste working together with clinical and non-clinical colleagues. It is a physical and fast paced job, every day is different and presents new challenges.

This is an important role providing and maintaining a positive environment for both patients and colleagues alike on site through;-

  • A professional, efficient and timely waste collection service
  • Ensuring the clearance of the clinical, non-clinical, hazardous, non-hazardous waste streams on site
  • Collecting dirty linen and scrubs for timely return to our contracted launderer

Good communication skills are essential as you will interact with many people in their work area across site as part of a team, or on your own , the waste streams are collected 5 times throughout the day and evening from all our wards and departments within the hospital.

If you are organised, have a passion and drive to provide an excellent service as well as confidence to carry out individual duties as delegated and can work on your own initiative when required, then this could be the job for you!

Main duties of the job

1. Collection of clinical, domestic, recycling and other special waste items from wards and departments in line with the Trusts Policy and Procedures.

2. Segregation of all waste streams prior to collection by waste contractors.

3. The weighing and logging of clinical waste bins and electrical appliances.

4. Collection of soiled laundry from wards and departments for storage prior to collection by the laundry supplier.

5. To collect and deliver furniture and other equipment as required from corridors, wards and departments as detailed in job request sheets.

The service covers 7 days a week, 6am -7.30pm and we are looking to cover the following 3 set shifts on site, plus 2 varied shifts.

Mondays 6am -2pm,

Thursdays 11.30am -19.30pm

Saturdays 8am-4pm.

The role is full time with 3 set days and 2 days varied covering leave and absence in the department. It's a good first step into the organisation, and if you do not like being stuck in one place all the time, it could be the perfect job for you - you are out and about most of the day visiting different areas, seeing different people each day.

To apply, you will need to possess a valid driving licence with C1 category on your existing driving licence (or willing to obtain a driving licence within 1st year of employment, and/ or with the opportunity to obtain C1 on top of your driving licence) which will enable you to hop on the 750 tonne van.
