Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time O&G doctor (equivalent ST4-7) to join our department at the Royal United Hospital Bath. The successful candidate will participate in a broad range of antenatal and elective gynaecology care. They will be part of the registrar on call rota, covering delivery suite and emergency gynaecology as well as providing elective gynaecology operating. The department has a consistently excellent reputation for training registrars as evidenced by the RCOG and GMC training surveys. Training can be offered in general areas of obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency gynaecology and early pregnancy as well as elective outpatient and theatre work. This includes specialist areas such as colposcopy, laparoscopy, gynaecological oncology and ambulatory gynaecology. Previous experience of working in the UK at registrar level is essential.

The 9 trainees work on the middle grade rota and are contracted to cover each other during absence on annual and study leave. The middle grades are resident on-call. They are expected to take part in teaching midwives and junior medical staff and help to plan the teaching programmes.

An interest in research and teaching is expected with participation in projects, courses, etc. to enhance the standing and role of the department and trust is encouraged. There are regular departmental meetings and research links with the University of Bath, University of Exeter and through the Bath School of Postgraduate Medicine.

Main duties of the job

We are a cohesive and experienced team, recently recognised for our excellent training opportunities at deanery and national level. The department is a leading ultrasound-training centre and consistently has excellent feedback from registrars.

Both the Gynaecology and Obstetric departments are situated in the Princess Anne Wing which is a purpose built Unit on the Royal United Hospital site. There are 16 Gynaecology beds and 40 Obstetric beds with a Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust serves a population of approximately 420,000 and the birth rate in the District is in the region of 5,000. Many of these are under the care of community midwives, but they are carefully screened and the consultant beds take the abnormal cases from the whole area. There are approximately 4,600 deliveries each year in the Princess Anne Wing.

All the usual facilities are provided including placental function tests, ultrasonic imaging monitoring and fetal blood sampling. The main purpose of the Department is to supervise ante-natal care for the whole District, and to ensure that high-risk cases are brought under the Consultant unit.

The Consultants have a range of special interests, as expected for a hospital of this size, including subfertility, laparoscopic surgery, colposcopy, tertiary surgical oncology and uro-gynaecology and with approximately 3000 gynaecology ops per year. The Bath Fertility Centre undertakes specialist infertility work including IVF
