Job summary

This is an eight-week summer internship working with members of the Clinical Imaging and Measurement Department of the Royal United Hospitals Bath. For further details of the internship scheme, please see the 'UWE Bristol Undergraduate Internship Scheme 2023' website.

We are exploring use of 360 videos as part of pain therapy and end of life care. Specifically using such immersive technology to 'virtually teleport' users to outdoor natural environments. Currently we are using an external content management system that provides 'white label' Unity app templates, enabling virtual reality headsets as well as Android and iOS tablets/phones to view cloud hosted 360 video content. There would be opportunity to further develop these apps in response to feedback from patients and clinicians using the system.

The intern would have a mixture of in-person and virtual supervision from RUH staff involved with funded Immersive Technology in Healthcare projects at the RUH. This would be complemented by dedicated access to immersive technology purchased as part of the project (i.e. 360 cameras, virtual reality headsets etc) to support development.

Main duties of the job

To work effectively as a part of a larger team and to work with clinical and academic staff to define project goals.

With appropriate academic and technical supervision, work within Unity to develop 2D and 3D user interfaces that are intuitive, forgiving and effective to use.

To assist with developing methods to assess user experience and engagement.

To present work, seek feedback and incorporate this when iteratively refining solutions.

To utilise a 'Slack' or similar messaging platform to facilitate communication and progress amongst the project team.

To plan and prioritise own workload as allocated to ensure that it is completed within agreed timescales.

To build and maintain effective working relationships with contacts outside the team. For example, through introduced collaboration with staff at a local hospice.

To solve day-to-day problems as they arise, following defined guidance in deciding how to resolve issues referring to defined sources for further help and assistance.

To comply with the RUH and UWE's equal opportunities policies, and to use this role to promote equality of opportunity where possible.

To take reasonable care of your own health and safety and comply with rules and guidance relating to health and safety matter.

Any other reasonable duties that fall within the scope of the post as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder.
