Job summary

This post is designed for candidates with previous experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology who have a special interest in medical education and wish to develop clinical aptitude in their professional development.

It is ideally targeted at ST3 and above, ST1 and ST2 trainees will be considered if appropriate experience.

It provides an excellent opportunity to combine clinically individualised tailored activity with undergraduate teaching.

You will be responsible for the teaching and management of the new MB21 Curriculum rotating 4th year Medical students, under the supervision of the Reproductive Health and Care of the Newborn Academy Lead, Mrs Claire Park.

The post will be up to five days per week - 3 equivalent working days primarily with the 4th year medical students in the Unit and 2 working days equivalent on the trainee rota. There is no on call commitment but this can be negotiable upon request and will be dependent upon the individual needs of the appointed trainee.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties - two days per week

The appointee will work with the other 6 SW fulltime equivalent trainees on the rota providing day to day first on-call cover for both obstetrics and gynaecology. As well as providing emergency daytime cover the appointee will have the opportunity to gain experience in apsects of their choice in antenatal and gynaecology clinics, specialist gynaecological clinics and in the operating theatre, or ultrasound scanning in obstetrics and or gynaecology or to learn a new skill eg Colposcopy.

Teaching / educational duties - three days per week

This time will be spent in developing a special interest in undergraduate medical education and in the delivery of the 'Reproductive Health and Care of the Newborn (RHCN)' 4th year medical school course.

The successful candidate will participate in weekly obstetrics and gynaecology teaching clinics and small group teaching and tutorials, centred on Case Based Learning as well as assisting at assessments.

It is expected that the Teaching Fellow will register and complete a Certificate of Medical Education at the University of Bristol which is funded for them by the Bath Academy. Allocated study will be available to attend all the required courses to complete this. You will also be trained in teaching on Undergraduate Prompt Course and there will be opportunities to develop a research interest.
