Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a permanent Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team. This role will service elective and emergency lists at the QEH site in the Main Theatres, the Day Surgery Unit and the Sandringham Unit.

In this role you will collaborate with Consultant Anaesthetists to ensure comprehensive and coordinated high quality anaesthetic services that meet the requirements of the Trust's objectives.

Time is allocated for supporting professional activities and these will be scheduled by mutual agreement with the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

All Consultants are expected to take advantage of study leave to maintain and develop their clinical skills to comply with CME requirements. Consultants have a leave quota of 30 days every 3 years for the purpose of study and professional leave.

For a full-time contract, the job plan will be divided on average per week (pro-rata for a part time post) as:

  • 9 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care - includes clinical activity, clinically related activity and predictable and unpredictable emergency work
  • 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) - includes CPD, audit, teaching and research.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be subject to adjustment when a further diary exercise is undertaken or if the service demands a review of the team job plan.

The on-call activity accounts for an additional 1.7 PA, covering both obstetric and general emergencies.

We also encourage consultants to apply for fellowship of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, to which we are an affiliated member.

About us

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) King's Lynn is located near some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK, along the north Norfolk coast, and not far from Sandringham House.

We provide a comprehensive range of specialist, acute, obstetrics and community-based healthcare services to around 331,000 people across west and north Norfolk, in addition to parts of Breckland, Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire.

We have more than 4,000 staff and volunteers, approximately 530 beds, and a helipad for air ambulances. We work with neighbouring hospitals for the provision of tertiary services, including as part of regional partnership and network models of care, such as the trauma network.

In February 2022 the significant progress that has been made at QEH was recognised by the Care Quality Commission who rated the Trust as 'Good' in all of the core services they inspected. They recommended the Trust moves out of the recovery support system (formerly special measures).
