Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Spinal Surgery

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 15 September 2024

Job summary

The post has been designed to offer sub-speciality training in paediatric spinal surgery and research. The programme is arranged in order that, over the course of the 6 or 12 months, the successful candidate will work with all the paediatric orthopaedic spinal surgeons at the Sheffield Children's Hospital.

It is the duty of the Fellow to supervise the running of the Orthopaedic Ward with other Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellows and the three Specialist Registrars. Time has been made available for research, which may be of the Fellows' own choice within the remit of the British Spine Registry and the current research programme within the spinal unit. We are the lead centre of the NIHR HTA funded BASIS study which the Fellow will be closely involved in.

Main duties of the job

The Fellow will have up to 2 dedicated lists each week with one of the Consultants (dual Consultant operating is currently 35% of the lists). There will also be weekly clinics, some of which will be supernumerary teaching clinics, including a multi-disciplinary neuromuscular clinic.

There will be an expectation of completing a research project during the Fellowship as the Unit is currently leading an NIHR funded multi-centre RCT on spinal bracing, has been collecting outcome measures on all patients for the last 15 years, is involved with the British Spine Registry and has research potential with the EOS system. The post includes at least a one day a week research commitment as the British Spine Registry Research Fellow. This will involve developing and delivering research and audit projects pertaining to spinal deformity management in the United Kingdom. The Spinal Unit regularly hosts a BSc Student from the University of Sheffield, and the successful candidate will be expected to be part of the supervisory team.

It is expected that applicants will demonstrate a desire to continue their practice in the paediatric spinal sub-specialities.
