Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Paediatric Nurse to join Ward 4 as a senior Staff Nurse. Ward 4 is a busy Medical ward, caring for children 0 to18 years, under the specialties of Paediatric medicine, gastroenterology, immunology, mental health, respiratory, rheumatology, endocrine and metabolic.

There is availability to work full/ part time hours for a fixed term of 12 months with a possibility of a permanent contract (not guaranteed). The role involves being part of a multi-disciplinary team across Medicine, providing specialist nursing care to the children and young people and their families.

The post holder must be motivated, organised, have excellent communications skills as well as being a team player. They must also be able to recognise their own limitations and be able to support others.

Medical experience is desirable, but not essential.

The post will include shift work involving a mix of days and nights from 07.00-19.30 and 19.00-07.30.

Main duties of the job

  • To co-ordinate and provide skilled nursing care to patients, in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • To participate in the continued development of nursing, including the supervision, teaching and development of junior nurses and support staff.
  • Act as an advocate for patients.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for an allocated patient group, in consideration of individual need, using prioritisation and delegation skills.
  • To assist the Ward Manager in managing and developing the Ward/Department.
  • To work collaboratively within a Multidisciplinary team, internal and external to the organisation, to facilitate holistic seamless care delivery for all Trust Patients.
  • To give leadership to junior staff and manage the Ward/Unit in the absence of the ward manager.
  • To support the ward manager in his/her role and participate in managing the ward, staff and resources, to maintain standards within the clinical governance agenda.
  • To represent the ward manager at relevant meetings and forums.
  • To deputise for the ward manager when required and act as role model and leader to other junior staff

  • To have completed band 5 development packages and have significant post registration experience within paediatrics at minimum of Band 5.
  • To undertake administration of prescribed medication within the Trust policy for administration of medicines.
  • To maintain confidentiality of information regarding children/ families at all times.
  • To act as a positive role model and resource person to others including patients and relatives.
  • To communicate and liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, both verbally and in writing, providing and receiving complex or sensitive information.
  • Promote and maintain good and effective communication with patients, relatives, and visitors.
  • Encourage patients and families to co-operate with treatment for their well-being, effectively deal with anxious relatives.
  • Communicate with the Ward Manager/Duty bleep-holder regarding any problems, untoward occurrences or accidents.
  • Manage a defined group of patients/clients, participating in all aspects of care from initial contact/admission through to discharge, including transferring from one environment to another.
