Job summary

Due to expanding service demand, a vacancy has arisen for a permanentHCPC registered (or soon to be registered) Healthcare/Clinical Scientist within Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service (SDGS). Applications from registered Clinical Scientists from other STP Life Sciences disciplines and STP/equivalence trainees are welcomed.

Main duties of the job

This vacancy is within either Oncology or Rare Disease Services. The post is subject to rotation between services in the laboratory. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop highly marketable knowledge, skills and further qualifications such as FRCPath etc.

You'll be responsible for the:

  • Delivery & scientific development of a high-quality diagnostic laboratory genetics service
  • Scientific leadership in service provision for a specified clinical area
  • Providing advice to consultants & other service users
  • Making contributions to shape national best-practice

The successful applicant will have appropriate HCPC registration (or be within 12 months of applying), will be prepared to train in new areas, be excellent communicators and contribute well to teamwork.Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service (SDGS) is a fully integrated laboratory with an interdisciplinary workforce of approximately 110 scientific, technical, bioinformatics, informatics, and administrative staff. We are based in modern facilities in Sheffield Childrens NHS Foundation Trust, next to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, The University of Sheffield, and within close walking distance from Sheffield Hallam University and the city centre. We deliver analysis and reporting of a huge range of Cancer and Rare Disease genomic services, including Specialist Services in haematology, musculoskeletal conditions, neurology, gastrohepatology and respiratory conditions. We work collaboratively with clinical colleagues (e.g. the Ehlers-Danlos National Diagnostic Service), academic units (e.g. the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience SITraN) and educational innovations (e.g. the Julia Garnham Centre developed with the University of Sheffield). We have well-established hybrid working policies and IT infrastructure to support effective working-from-home.

The combined size of our geography makes this the largest collaboration in the country with the Trusts offering a range of both general and specialist hospital services with excellence in specialist care, research, and academic training.

  • Graduate in relevant good (2.2 or above) honours degree in science or additional postgraduate qualification if not appropriate degree
