Job summary

We are looking for a Speech & Language Therapy Assistant to join our Mainstream Paediatric Team. This permanent post is 5 days a week (37.5 hours) term time only.

Interview date 28th March.

Main duties of the job

  • The post involves working independently, under the guidance of a speech and language therapist, to implement speech sound programmes with primary aged children in mainstream schools. You will be working in a range of different schools across the city and applicants must have access to their own transport and be confident in travelling (please state this in your application). The successful candidate will have experience of working with primary aged children in a school environment, and will have well-developed collaborative working practices. They will be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills, the ability to work flexibly and manage their own workload.

Job responsibilities

  • To implement and monitor therapy programmes, in conjunction with a Speech & Language Therapist (SaLT), for children in mainstream schools with speech sound difficulties which, at times, may be part of a broader mild learning or communication difficulty.
  • To engage the support of clients parents/carer and educational staff and to encourage them to complement the programme by provision of carry-over activities.
  • To model activities and share resources with key adults engaged in supporting the child
  • To plan, manage and prioritise your own caseload.

  • To participate in regular meetings with SaLTs to plan clear individual aims for children and realistic timescales in which to achieve these aims.
  • To recognise when interventions are not effective and seek further supervision from the supporting SaLT.
  • To be aware of when it is appropriate to refer a client or their carers back to the SaLT.
  • To design and prepare clinical materials for use in therapy sessions, or by school staff, parents, carers.
  • To maintain and update technical skills, to access and maintain confidential records, and to produce clinical resources.
  • To have due regard for personal safety and that of children/carers.
  • To work within infection control and health and safety guidelines in order to deal appropriately with unpleasant conditions related to client contact.
