Tobacco Treatment Advisor

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

This post will contribute to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting patients and their families to stop smoking. The post holder will provide tobacco treatment advice and support to individuals and groups of people, who want to stop smoking. This will be for patients, parents/carers and staff.

The Tobacco Treatment Advisors are a fundamental part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw QUIT Programme (a tobacco treatment initiative aimed at identifying patients and their parents/carers who are smokers in order to provide appropriate treatment and support to enable them to stop smoking).

The NHS Long Term Plan sets out new commitment for action that the NHS itself will take to improve prevention. Tobacco dependency is a chronic, relapsing clinical condition that prematurely kills at least half of people who smoke and over 6,000 children's lives are lost each year because of second-hand smoke. Smoking is seen as a medical condition that can be treated, rather than as a lifestyle choice.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications and e-cigarettes, working within recommended protocols and guidelines.
  • Deliver face to face sessions in a variety of settings across the Trust, working closely with the Community Stop Smoking Service.
  • Provide recommendations of any changes to NRT prescribed to patients to the medical staff on wards, following review and assessment of withdrawal symptoms of patient.
  • Provide information to people about tobacco dependency and the treatment options, minimizing harm from tobacco in line with best guidance and protocols.
  • Provide general health and lifestyle advice and support to people using the service e.g. healthy eating, physical activity, stress management.
  • Refer to other health, community and voluntary services.
  • Deliver tobacco harm reduction/stop smoking support to specific client groups (e.g. pre-operative patients, inpatients, outpatients, parents/carers of people who have been admitted and staff).
  • Provide smoking cessation advice and support to ward staff.
  • To make referrals to and liaise closely with the community stop smoking service for patients, parents/carers and staff where necessary.
  • To complete follow up calls to patients within 5 days following discharge from hospital.
  • Help to facilitate smokefree environments and be a Smokefree Champion.
