Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Paediatric Neurology team at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust as a Locum Consultant. Applications are invited from candidates with appropriate training and experience for the post of Locum Consultant in Paediatric Neurology.

The post is full-time and is based predominantly at Sheffield Children's Hospital and the Ryegate Children's Centre.

Applicants should possess CCST/CCT in Paediatrics (Paediatric Neurology) at the time of commencing the appointment or be within 6 months of CCST/CCT at the time of interview, or have equivalent level training, and have had appropriate experience within a dedicated Paediatric Neurology Unit of general paediatric neurology. This post is designed to support and develop Paediatric Neurology services and it is expected the successful candidate will have appropriate experience and enthusiasm in this area of medicine.

Main duties of the job

The Department of Paediatric Neurology is based at the Ryegate Children's Centre (which is approximately 1 mile to the west of the main Children's Hospital) and offers a sub-regional service in childhood neurological disease, providing care to patients from the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System.

As a national centre of excellence, the service also supports some aspects of outreach care to a wider geographical footprint, e.g.outpatient support to Chesterfield / North Derbyshire.

Outpatients are seen in a variety of settings with clinics currently provided at the Ryegate Children's Centre, Sheffield Children's Hospital, and Northern General Hospital.

In addition, there are regular Neurology outreach clinics in the surrounding District General Hospitals.

Inpatients are managed at the Children's Hospital in a dedicated inpatient Neuroscience Unit, covering Neurology and Neurosurgery. Within the Children's Hospital there are video-telemetry facilities, providing two dedicated weekday telemetry beds. These can be extended to weekend working in exceptional circumstances.

Job responsibilities

The post will involve joining our dynamic and experienced neurology team providing and growing the service, including new specialist clinics, in Sheffield. The post will be based at the Ryegate Childrens Centre and Sheffield Childrens Hospital. The Ryegate Childrens Centre is a Child Development Centre located in a leafy suburb of Sheffield with on-road car parking. Paediatric neurology is co-located with the wider team, including epilepsy nurses, neurology nurses, neuropsychology, the gait lab, therapy services, and the neurodisability team. It is approximately 20-25minutes walk from Sheffield Childrens Hospital, 10 minutes by car.

The appointee will be an important member of the team, delivering general paediatric neurology services and epilepsy services.

As a regional service, the wider team provide neurology outreach services to Chesterfield, Doncaster, Bassetlaw, Barnsley, Rotherham, Grimsby, and Boston, and the candidate will be expected to deliver some outreach clinics in either 1 or 2 centres. At present, approximately 50% of outreach clinics are performed virtually.

The role will also include on call. Sheffield Childrens NHS foundation Trust runs a consultant of the week model for acute referrals on a 1:5 basis, providing on-call during the hours of 8am-6pm weekdays and 12-3pm weekends and bank holidays with on-call duties incorporated into this programme. During this week, the on-call consultant is responsible for all newly admitted patients with neurological disease and takes calls and referrals from Paediatricians in Sheffield and in the surrounding environs. During the on call week, the consultant is based at Sheffield Childrens Hospital Monday to Friday, and an office is provided for administration work and meetings. During the on call week, the consultant is responsible for postgraduate teaching and assessments of trainees. During the weekends/bank holidays and out of hours on weekdays, the inpatients are covered by the general paediatric team, who perform daily ward rounds. However, an in-person neurological review may be requested for urgent cases. It is expected that the new appointee would provide cover for colleagues during periods of absence.
