Job responsibilities

SDGS is a fully integrated laboratory with an interdisciplinary workforce of approximately 110 scientific, technical, bioinformatics, informatics, and administrative staff. We are based in modern facilities in Sheffield Childrens NHS Foundation Trust, next to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, The University of Sheffield, and within close walking distance from Sheffield Hallam University and the city centre. We are part of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH) for NHSEngland, and also provide services for non-NHSEngland UK and international referrals. We have active Research & Development activities, collaborating with local universities and with industry partners.

North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH) is an exciting collaboration formed from Newcastle Teaching Hospitals, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Childrens NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and NewGene, to provide services for Genomics across the North East and Yorkshire and Humber. The combined size of our geography makes this the largest collaboration in the country with the Trusts offering a range of both general and specialist hospital services with excellence in specialist care, research, and academic training.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

• Graduate in relevant good (2.2 or above) honours degree in science or additional postgraduate qualification if not appropriate degree
• Registered in appropriate scheme for Healthcare Scientist

Desirable

• Relevant post graduate or masters qualification

Experience

Essential

• Post registration experience in Genetics over a range of services
• Experience of service planning, development and delivery
• Experience of management of some aspects of CPA

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

• Broad practical and theoretical knowledge of Human Genetics with several areas of highly specialist skills and detailed knowledge.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety, quality management and CPA requirements in a laboratory environment.
• Very high level of technical and analytical skill including trouble shooting with complex systems.
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to train and develop staff in clinical science. Excellent organisational skills including meticulous record keeping.
• Ability to supervise and manage services, or groups of services, and meet tight deadlines where results may influence critical, potentially life-threatening treatment.

Personal Attributes

Essential

• Excellent team player and independent worker. Able to deal with confidential and emotionally stressful issues such as PreNatal Diagnosis and/or significant patient mortality.
