Job summary
This newly created one-year post represents an exciting development in the provision of undergraduate teaching in Child Health, as part of the University of Sheffield's MBChB degree. The post-holder an ST4 - ST8 paediatric trainee on a one year 'out of programme experience' will be central to the provision of the clinical teaching required by the undergraduates undertaking their 6-week rotation in Child Health at Sheffield Children's NHS FT.
The post holder's primary duties will be to: teach, mentor and assess students, and play a significant contributory role in the evolution and running of the Child Health course. The primary responsibility of the Fellow will be the delivery and coordination of the teaching of the students allocated to SC(NHS)FT for their clinical placement.
Main duties of the job
Teaching of students is likely to include an introductory session in week 1, thrice weekly bedside teaching, AAU and jaundice teaching clinics, running practical skills sessions (e.g. BLS, ENT, fluid management), supervision of students seeing patients on the Acute Assessment Unit, coordination of the mentoring scheme for students and delivery of ILAs (see example timetable below). We anticipate that the appointed fellow will train to become an assessor/examiner, both helping to mark the written work and performing formative and summative assessments. In addition the fellow may be asked to deliver lectures.
The fellow will be expected to contribute to the Child Health course by writing exam questions for Phase 3a examinations, and other phase examinations that include Child Health. These will be overseen by the DUGME and Research and Teaching Fellow. There are opportunities to attend an examination writing course run by the University. They will have the opportunity to attend meetings at the Medical school including Phase 3a meetings, examination blue printing meeting. They will be required to contribute to the Phase 3a written examination internal quality assurance, standard setting and marking. There will be opportunities to contribute more widely to Medical School activities such as interviewing for medical school entry.

The Fellow will be part of an Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) team responsible for the evolution of the course and the delivery of high-quality undergraduate education to our doctors, and paediatricians, of the future.
The UGME team comprises the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education (DUGME), a Deputy DUGME, a Teaching and Research Fellow who acts as Child Health Rotation Lead, three allied Research Fellows (who help deliver the ILAs) and administrative support from the Department of Medical Education at SC(NHS)FT and Academic Unit Medical Education at the Medical School.
The post-holder will be managerially accountable to the DUGME.

Clinical Duties
As the prime focus of the post will be delivery of clinical teaching it is anticipated that the fellow will be assigned to the Acute Assessment Unit at SCH weekly, during which they will see and assess patients, with students attached to deliver both teaching and clinical care. Similarly it is anticipated they will have responsibility for one or two weekly jaundice clinics, which provide valuable teaching opportunities for students. Normal safeguarding practice will be expected.

Have experience in the coordination and delivery of undergraduate medical education.
Have gained experience in different teaching modalities e.g. lectures, small group seminars, bedside teaching, teaching clinics.
Have gained experience of mentoring.
Have experience in assessment of students undertaking the Child Health rotation as part of their undergraduate medical studies.
Have gained experience of exam question writing and marking for UG examinations.
Have gained generic leadership, managerial and organisational skills.
