Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, dynamic individual to join us in the role of Associate Biomedical Scientist Practitioner for Newborn Bloodspot Screening.

This is an essential role for the laboratory as the individual carries out a wide range of highly specialised laboratory procedures of varying complexity, urgency and clinical importance. The successful candidate should have significant experience of a range of highly specialised analytical laboratory techniques.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for;

  • Participating fully in all aspects of the analytical work of the Newborn Screening section of the laboratory
  • Providing an accurate and timely laboratory testing service in support of patient care
  • Providing support to the Newborn Screening Specimen Reception

Job responsibilities

The Department of Clinical Chemistry comprises a team of 60 staff who are committed to delivering an efficient, high quality diagnostic service. It is a busy, friendly department. We have an excellent reputation as a specialist laboratory and provide a comprehensive metabolic analytical service along with regional newborn screening, as well as the routine Clinical Chemistry service to the Childrens Hospital and paediatric patients from local GP practices.

The screening laboratory is the second busiest newborn screening laboratory in England. The region covered includes Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, South Humberside and South Yorkshire; serving a population of around 5 million. Newborn Bloodspot Screening is performed on around 75,000 babies each year. In addition, we perform dietary monitoring for the lifelong treatment of phenylketonuria (PKU) patients.

The role is linked to a national project that the laboratory is participating in with regards to screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). As a result of this the post is temporary for 12 months but there may be an option to extend or make permanent at the end of this period.

The hours of work are 9am until 5pm, Monday to Friday.

The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with Academia and Industry to improve health and innovation in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff.
