Trainee Orthopaedic Technician (Band 3)

Job summary
To provide support and assistant to the plaster room staff and nursing staff in the delivery of a flexible responsive service commensurate with the needs of the Outpatients Service, A&E Department and the orthopaedic services.
The post holder will be supervised by a Band 5 Orthopaedic Technician or an appropriately trained nurse. They will work to a training programme under supervision.
The Post holder is to attend and complete the British Casting certificate, when they meet the criteria require to attend the British Casting Certificate.
Main duties of the job
To undertake assigned tasks as directed by medical, nursing staff and colleagues. This may be without direct supervision with suitable training and completed assessments.
Under supervision, until assessed as competent, to apply all types of splints/casts in a range of suitable materials - to suit the presenting conditions.
Under supervision, until assessed as competent, To measure, supply and fit orthopaedic appliances where appropriate.
To support the provision of a Plaster Room service in various settings, Plaster Room, the Accident & Emergency Department, Theatres and inpatient wards for primary splinting/casting and the application of suitable fixation or stabilisation devices. Casting to be done under supervision until assessed as competent.
To measure, provide and advise on the use of suitable walking aids.
To provide advice to patients, written and verbal, on splint/cast care and complications.
To continue to develop practice in accordance with new research and develop work-based practice to maintain high standards.
To partake in research and audit of work when required.
Ensure all instruments and equipment are maintained in good order and the Plaster Room is kept clean and tidy.
Advise patients on potential complications of casting and how to contact to the department.
Report all risk incidents, hazards and accidents to the Sister/Senior Sister and relevant department.
