Job summary

The Department of Histopathology is looking to appoint a Band 7 to undertake the role of Section Lead based at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Bradford Royal Infirmary forms part of Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP. LLP is an innovative joint-venture pathology service between Airedale NHS Foundation Trust (AGH), Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BRI) and Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. This partnership delivers a high-quality pathology service through collaboration between three Trusts for the benefit of patient and service users.

The UKAS accredited Histopathology department at BRI is responsible for the triaging and dissecting of specimens. In addition, the department performs frozen sections, ensures suitability of renal biopsies for diagnostic assessment and performs staining of some skin and renal biopsies.

Due to the nature of current processing workflow there will be a particularly close link with Airedale site colleagues.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate practical competencies within the cut up area. Experience of the dissection of category B specimens would be advantageous.

The candidate should possess clear communication skills and be able to discuss a variety of organisational skills appropriate to the role.

Main duties of the job

To manage and participate in the day to day technical running of the main histopathology laboratory, which includes immunohistochemistry and cytology, so as to provide an efficient, safe and high quality service.

To work closely with the Advanced Practitioner in the management of the department and to deputise for her in the management of the cut-up section in her absence

To ensure, supervise and monitor the quality of the work of the BMS's and MLA's within the main histopathology laborator

To develop and implement departmental standard operating procedures and quality standards with regard to work selection and methods.

To ensure that the performances in EQA and IQA programmes are satisfactory and to identify, monitor and correct any underperformance.

To assist in the procurement and purchase of equipment and the introduction of new methods.

To ensure that there are appropriate staffing levels within the laboratory, including extended day and weekend work.
