Job summary

We have an opportunity for a full time enthusiastic well motivated qualified Pharmacy Technician with excellent dispensing and communication skills to join our friendly, supportive and welcoming pharmacy team as the Senior Pharmacy Technician for Education and Training. This would be an ideal opportunity for an experienced, registered Pharmacy Technician. We will support the successful candidate with their introduction into this role, and with their future professional development.

In addition to the Education and Training aspect of the role, duties include ward based medicines management, undertaking drug histories and medicines reconciliation with patients, initiating supplies of medicines in a timely and economical manner, and the dispensing and checking of prescriptions for in-patients, out-patients and TTOs . They will also be involved in the 'Point of Care' testing of warfarin patients and be expected to host this clinic on a rotational basis.

The successful candidate will have a BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent qualification and must be a Pharmacy Technician registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. They will have excellent interpersonal skills, be good at managing their time, be flexible in their approach to work and be an excellent team player. They will already hold an Accredited Checking Qualification, or be extremely close to completion.

Main duties of the job

  1. Education and Training lead for pharmacy technicians and assistants
  2. Work in various areas of the Pharmacy including Ward based Medicines Management, Warfarin clinic and Dispensary
  3. Participate in the full ward based medicines management service.
  4. Hosts warfarin 'Point of Care' Testing and dosing clinics on a rotational basis.
  5. Responsible for the final checking of dispensed products
  6. Support and deputise for the Lead Pharmacy Technicians
  7. Supervise, mentor and train a range of junior staff

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Follow documented departmental Standard Operating Procedures and all other related hospital policies. Recommend and implement changes to departmental SOPs. Be responsible for keeping up to date with changes to Standard Operating Procedures and policies.
  • Dispensing of in-patient supplies; ward stock, take home drugs and providing drug supplies via the "one stop" service. Routinely counsel a wide range of patients within the department and on the wards/clinical areas. Accurately dispense and check controlled drugs. Routinely give advice to and liaise with a range of medical and nursing staff. Assess patients own drugs. Handle complaints and queries.
  • Dispensing of prescriptions to out patients. Ensure good customer services and that all customers are dealt with in a timely manner. Routinely counsel patients on the storage, correct dosage/use, side effects and other relevant information about the drugs supplied, including clinical trial material and unlicensed medicines. Accurately handle payments of prescription charges. Handle complaints and queries.
  • Take responsibility for the accurate and timely input of information onto the pharmacy computer system to ensure the maintenance of a reliable database. Be familiar with the department procedures for system failures.
  • Work independently to provide a medicines management service on a range of hospital wards. This involves responsibility for liaising with medical and ward staff and a wide range of patients to deliver an accurate supply of medication. Gather information about prescribed drugs on admission. Ensure the patient has an up to date and appropriate supply of drugs for their stay in hospital and upon discharge. Ensure drugs are dispensed in suitable forms and containers for patient compliance. At the bedside counsel and advise patients on the correct use/dosage, side effects, storage and any other relevant information about the drugs dispensed for them. Take accurate medication histories. Fill in pharmaceutical care plans for multi-professional use. Handle complaints and queries. Work closely with the Lead Clinical Pharmacist and regularly take part in Medicines Management review meetings.
  • Hold a recognised qualification/award to enable the checking of prescriptions which have been dispensed by other members of pharmacy staff. Perform final accuracy checks for discharge, outpatient, leave, in-patient and ward stock prescriptions.
  • Follow documented Standard Operating Procedures to prepare Covid vaccines in the vaccination centre demonstrating Aseptic manipulation and technique. Adhere to any relevant Health and safety policies to protect the product and the operator.
  • Host warfarin Point of Care testing and dosing clinics. Deals with messages from warfarin patients and responds according to queries and requests for appointments etc.
  • Use available computer resources to record and review documented Key Performance Indicators. Participate in new IT strategies and developments affecting Pharmacy
  • Ensure all errors, complaints and adverse incidents related to pharmacy are promptly reported in accordance with Trust guidelines
  • The post holder will be required to work regular Weekends and Bank holidays as part of the Pharmacy rota.
