Job summary

We would welcome applications from doctors taking a break from training following completion of foundation training (either because you are out of phase, planning to take a break for part of the year or looking for some alternative experience prior to deciding/commencing specialty training). Less than full time (LTFT) or job share applications will be considered but this will normally require a proportionate share of out of hours shifts.

Main duties of the job

  • Labour ward triage, ward management, assisting in obstetric theatre, patient assessment in MAC
  • 1st on call duties for acute gynaecology through ED, EPAU and GATU
  • Gynaecology and Antenatal clinic under supervision
  • Operating under supervision

About us

The Department is a purpose built unit most of which was constructed in or around 1970. The facilities include:

  • Labour Ward - with eight delivery rooms, four of these are in the very modern midwifery led unit and 4 in the refurbished consultant led side. We have a dedicated obstetric theatre, resident Obstetric Anaesthetist and Consultant Anaesthetist. The birth rate is currently over 2200 deliveries per annum.
  • Obstetric Ward - a 15 bed ward for antenatal and postnatal patients.
  • Antenatal Clinic - with two consulting rooms and four examination rooms and Ultrasound scanning facility.
  • Maternity Assessment Unit (MAC) - open 6 days a week, adjacent to Labour ward.
  • Gynaecology Inpatient- Gynaecology patients are cared on a female surgical ward.
  • Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit / Gynae Assessment Treatment Unit- One of the first in the UK, this unit provides 'one-stop' streamlined access to Women with potential miscarriages and Acute Gynaecological emergencies.
  • Theatre Suite - of 7 theatres including a Gynaecology Theatre, dedicated Obstetric theatre, Recovery Suite, Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit.
  • Out-Patient Department - located within the main Hospital. In November 2000 a new outpatient facility was opened to provide replacement facilities for colposcopy and a new area for outpatient hysteroscopy. A PMB clinic is established providing a one-stop assessment service. There is also a well established dedicated infertility clinic.

We currently have an opportunity in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The post is for 6 months fixed term.

Airedale is a small acute general hospital and community Foundation Trust with an excellent reputation for medical staff training and education. We are proud to be an associated teaching hospital of Leeds School of Medicine; we provide clinical placements in a wide range of specialties for doctors in training from foundation to specialist trainee level and we are host employer for the Airedale GP Training Programme.

Our commitments to you would be:

  • A clinical supervisor.
  • An e-portfolio if required.
  • Training opportunities.
  • GMC connection to the Trust and Responsible Officer.
  • An appraisal if required.

If you are able and prepared to commit for >6 months:

  • Up to 1 day per week doing student teaching/simulation/QI project of interest to you or a prolonged break part way through the year (perhaps to go travelling etc); this must be discussed and agreed at interview.

Our expectations of you would be that you will:

  • Have already completed 1 year of Foundation Training (or equivalent); previous NHS experience would be a definite advantage.
  • Be able to act at ST 1-2 level and provide supervision and support to junior colleagues.
  • Have full GMC registration and a licence to practice; please do not apply unless you already have FULL GMC registration
  • Have a PLAB certificate if required.
  • Participate in the normal rota for trainees in the specialty/specialties you are employed; this would usually include out of hours shifts but this depends on the specialty.
