Job summary
Enthusiastic and highly motivated clinicians are invited to submit an application for the above position working at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust. This is a substantive appointment due to expansion of the department. We are looking for someone dynamic & well managed, has a major interest in acute care, and the enthusiasm to support the overall development of the orthopaedic department. The postholder we require will share our passion for excellence and want to join our team.
Our department is large enough to get interesting cases, but small enough to care, coach and develop. There have been many quality enhancing service improvements in the past three years, and we pride ourselves on our consultant delivered acute trauma management and elective orthopaedics. We have received an 'exemplar' report on standards and delivery on the GIRFT report of 2014.
The appointee will be expected to take part in a one in twelve on-call rota. The post holder must hold the CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedics or be within 6 months of attaining it. They must be in the process of or have completed an advanced training fellowship in foot and ankle surgery and be keen to develop the sub-speciality and compliment the orthopaedic service further within the organisation.
Main duties of the job
This is a permanent substantive post due to expansion of the department. The successful candidate will join eleven other consultants on a 1 in 12 on-call rota. This is a full time post with a 10 PA job plan.
The duties outlined below are not definitive but cover the main duties of the post and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.
Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
Contributing to post-graduate and continuing medical and multi professional education activity including teaching as necessary.
Conducting appropriate duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
Multidisciplinary teamwork and will involve Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) discussion with other colleagues.
Development of special interests that fit in with the Directorate needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
Undertaking ward rounds as appropriate. Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
Maintain and support the continued development of the provision of elective and emergency orthopaedic surgery working as a key member of the orthopaedic team.
Provide a comprehensive service to manage elective soft tissue knee and primary knee arthroplasty.
About us
The Trauma and Orthopaedic unit is based within 2 wards.
Ward 18, a 16 bed ward is newly refurbished and a fully ring-fenced elective unit with private patient bed facilities. There is an on-ward physiotherapy unit and pre-op education centre for arthroplasty. Enhanced recovery protocols are well established within the unit. All elective patients are admitted on day of surgery to a separate admission ward where they remain post-operatively if Day cases, or transfer direct to the ring-fenced Ward 18 post-operatively if inpatient. Beds available as required on the paediatric ward.
Ward 9, a 29 bed facility is our dedicated Trauma ward. Recently refurbished as part of the Trust strategy in supporting patients with dementia.
Elective out patient clinics are undertaken at Airedale General Hospital, Ilkley Coronation Hospital and Skipton General Hospital. All fracture clinics are at Airedale General Hospital. Further work is ongoing to widen the provision of outpatient clinics in to the Bingley and Colne areas.
There is an integrated suite of nine operating theatres which opened in May 1996, including 2 clean air theatres and a new clean air barn theatre containing 2 clean air theatres which opened in 2022.
A new intensive therapy unit opened in 2022 and has a flexible bed base which is staffed for four ITU and four HDU beds
