Job summary

We are seeking an experienced senior nurse to be a motivated ward Ward Manager and lead our dynamic cardio-respiratory ward. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled nurse leader to deliver high quality, patient centred care while driving excellence in clinical practice and team performance.

As Ward Manager, you will be responsible for the day to day operational management of the ward, ensuring safe staffing, effective patient flow, and the delivery of outstanding care to patients with complex cardiac and respiratory conditions. You will provide strong clinical leadership, support and develop your team, and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.

The successful candidate will have significant experience in cardio respiratory or acute medical nursing and will be telemetry trained, with the ability to monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms. You must also be competent and confident in managing advanced respiratory support therapies, including CPAP, BiPAP, and High Flow Nasal Oxygen.

You will play a key role in maintaining patient safety, meeting quality and governance standards, and driving continuous improvement across the ward. Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills are essential, along with a passion for delivering high standards of care.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide overall leadership and management of the Cardio Respiratory Ward (Wensleydale) ensuring delivery of safe, high quality, patient centred care.
  • Maintain 24-hour accountability for clinical standards, patient safety, and the patient experience.
  • Lead, manage, and develop the nursing and support workforce, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, skill mix, and safe rostering.
  • Act as a visible clinical leader and role model, promoting professional standards and a positive ward culture.
  • Oversee patient flow, including admissions, transfers, and discharges, to support effective capacity management and reduce length of stay within admissions.
  • Monitor and manage the ward budget, including staffing expenditure, and ensure cost effective use of resources.
  • Lead on quality assurance, including audits, CQC standards, and compliance with national and local policies.
  • Analyse quality and performance data (e.g. incidents, complaints, falls, pressure ulcers), implementing improvement plans where required.
  • Ensure robust clinical governance systems are in place, including risk management, incident reporting, and learning from events.
  • Lead investigations into incidents, complaints, and safeguarding concerns, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Promote and ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, effective care delivery.
