Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join our Clinical Coding Services Team.

The work involves extracting relevant information from patient records, discussing queries with clinicians, other clinical coding team members, or the National Classifications Service, and then translating the diagnosis and procedures into codes using standard national classifications (ICD10 and OPCS 4), adhering to all national standards and conventions.

The information Coders produce is used to report on patient outcomes, improve patient care and ensure that the Trust is appropriately paid for the treatments provided to patients admitted to hospital.

Main duties of the job

To fulfil this important role you will need to exhibit excellent logical and analytical skills, demonstrate sound judgement in translating often complex patient records. Flexible in your approach you must be able to work as part of a team to tight deadlines. You must have knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, good IT skills and the ability to work to a high degree of accuracy with attention to detail.

Applicants with experience in Clinical Coding and are ACC qualified will need to meet the criteria outlined in the person specification, A4C Band 4.

Applicants who do not hold ACC accreditation would enter as a Trainee Clinical Coder Band 3 and be fully supported through an initial extensive training programme to enable you to gain a good knowledge of medical conditions, clinical coding principles and become proficient in this interesting field. After two years you will be eligible to undertake the National Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification Examination, and upon successful attainment of this qualification you will move to a Band 4 ACC Clinical Coder role. Those not wishing to study for the national exam will have to demonstrate after three years, through a series of internal assessment and audit, that they hold the necessary skills and knowledge before moving to a Band 4 Clinical Coder role.
