Job summary

Apprentice School Nurse (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse -School Nurse)

Are you a Registered Nurse or Midwife with a special interest and commitment to improving the Health and Social outcomes for children and families? Harrogate District Foundation Trust is currently recruiting to full time Apprentice School Nurse post (78 weeks). On completion of the course within timescales you will secure a permanent School Nurse position.

Apprentices will be aligned to a practice assessor in either

Durham/Darlington/Middlesbrough/Stockton.

Main duties of the job

The post holder has lead responsibility in delivering the following key areas:

  • To participate in all elements of the SCPHN programme both theory and practice and ensure completion of all approved programme documentation and assessments which must be submitted within time scale

Once SCPHN course has been completed:

  1. Practitioner to be assigned to an area from across the footprint to fulfil the role of a School Nurse.
  2. To commence and engage in the trust preceptorship programme and be appointed to a preceptor to provide supervision and support.

Once SCPHN qualification is obtained and registered with the NMC, staff to be appointed to a band 6.

Job responsibilities

The academic element of the course will be hosted by Teesside University.

As a School Nurse you can make a real difference to children, families and communities. You will play a fundamental role monitoring child development, safeguarding children, preventing social exclusion and deprivation and tackling important public health issues. Every day working as a School Nurse is different, with responsibilities including home visits, working in Schools and other community venues, running support groups for parents and working with a range of local childrens agencies and professionals School Nurses have the opportunity to work flexibly in the community and are a crucial part of the healthcare team. It is a diverse role which involves being part of a wider team who provide you with support as you work to improve the health of local families

Training

Teesside University, are undergoing course approval in line with the new NMC Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Standards of Proficiency (2022) and are looking to offer an apprenticeship route which leads to the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing qualification together with the academic award of a postgraduate diploma.

To be eligible to apply you will need to be a Registered Nurse or Midwife on parts 1 or 2 of the NMC register. You must also have a degree at 2.2 or above. The training is 37.5 hours full time with fixed annual leave dates, (no pre booked leave will be honoured).

Applicants must have English and Maths at grade C or level 4 or Key Skill Level 2 in Maths and English.

(Applicants who do not hold BSc at 2:2 and have experience of working in the 0-19 Service can complete a RPEL portfolio at level 6. Successful achievement will permit application for SCPHN (This does not guarantee entry and achievement must be confirmed prior to application

Applicants also need to have been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the course start date in September unless they are in an exempt group.

We have placements in Durham, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Darlington and North Yorkshire.

Further responsibilities for this role will be;

  • To take responsibility in organising planned tripartite and bipartite meetings with your Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor.
  • To fully participate in the teaching strategies used by the Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor
  • To develop professional knowledge and competence, pertaining to School Nursing and relevant to safe standards of professional practice.
  • To accurately record information within systmone records understanding and documenting cumulative risk and auctioning appropriately. Records to be contemporaneous and recorded timely as per trust policy.
  • Confidentiality to be maintained at all times. Access to electronic devised to be kept safe and stored as per trust policy.
  • Under the supervision of the Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor manage delegated workload/caseload and supervise staff if appropriate.
  • To undertake nursing and public health duties under direct and indirect supervision of the Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor
  • To act in accordance with all Trust policies.
  • Completion of comprehensive Health Needs assessments of clients, families and communities and facilitation of the mobilisation of appropriate resources to meet identified needs.
  • Using communication, listening and negotiation skills interpret family history, dynamics, lifestyle and the support available to a family in partnership with parents/carers to enable them to identify their own health needs and facilitate solutions to identified concerns and needs.
  • Promote the needs of children with SEND, young people with SEND and their families in the development of community child health services.
  • Promote the needs of children, young people and families from the GRT community in the development of community child health services
  • Deliver a place-based approach with Key Delivery Partners (KDPs) to support the needs of Children, Young People and Families alongside building community resilience. Supported by the Community Anchor, practitioners will work within the community to build capacity and increase resilience utilising an asset-based approach. Practitioners will need to work in collaboration with KDPs and the Voluntary and Community Sector to map and align services to meet population need, whilst developing innovative ways of working
  • Analyse complex and multiple family health needs e.g. child protection.
  • Present complex and sensitive information and contribute to decision making within a multi-agency forum that includes parents and carers e.g. Child Protection Case Conferences, demonstrate commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk of harm by working to relevant safeguarding legislation, multi-agency policies and procedures and work within local Safeguarding Children Partnership Multi Agency Child Protection Procedures.
  • Adhere and refer to Trust and Local Childrens Safeguarding Partnerships Policies/procedures.
  • All registered nurses will be required to assess or supervise pre and post registration students during their training, and to act as a sign off mentor for unqualified staff completing the care certificate.
  • Participate in HDFT preceptorship support programme for identified staff.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources to manage the caseload effectively, appreciating the needs of children, families, communities and the service.
  • Demonstrate up-to-date research-based, clinically effective practice, ensuring awareness of current legislation, education and audit. Take responsibility for personal development and education in line with NMC revalidation requirements.
