An exciting opportunity has arisen at HDFT for a Registered Nurse to pilot a Cancer Internship Programme. This is supported by Health Education England and aspires to develop our cancer workforce and provide excellence in cancer care across our organisation.

The Programme

Registered Nurses working at band 5/6 level are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will be funded for 7.5 hrs per week for 12 months at Band 5/Band 6 to complete the programme.

Main duties of the job

Interns will be expected to:

  • Develop their knowledge and skills through the utilisation of a competency framework- with a view to identifying training needs and ongoing professional development.
  • Have the opportunity to work as part of a specialist CNS cancer team at HDFT through the provision of clinical placements across a variety of cancer specialties.
  • Work with CNS teams around the personalised care of cancer patients, to increase the interns understanding of the wider needs and services involved in the cancer patients' journey.
  • Be supported to identify a service improvement initiative for cancer to implement within their current area of practice, to improve the care and experience of cancer patients.
  • Have access to other relevant cancer training to develop their knowledge and skills.
  • Be accredited at level 6 through completion of "Principles of Integrated Practice in Cancer and other Long-Term Conditions," module, delivered through self -directed distance learning with the University of Teesside.

The Internship pilot aims to:

  • Support succession planning within cancer nursing by providing an opportunity for registered nurses to develop more specialist knowledge, skill and experience through working directly with our cancer teams.
  • Retain experienced and motivated qualified staff by providing career development opportunities for individuals interested in cancer nursing and capable of progressing to a higher level.
  • Develop the clinical competence, skills and knowledge of each successful intern, to enrich patient experience in our clinical areas and ensure excellence in patient care.
  • Enable the intern through the programme learning outcomes to make positive service improvements for cancer within their area of practice.
