Job summary

Over almost 4 years the Active Against Cancer team have established and run a ground breaking, and award-winning service incorporating exercise into the treatment pathways of all cancer patients within Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. This is a rare, and much sought after opportunity to contribute to the delivery of this novel service. HDFT are seeking to appoint a number of experienced sessional Physical Trainers to work as valued members of the team to design and deliver group-based activity sessions in and around the Harrogate & Ripon area to patients living with and beyond cancer.

We are looking for Trainers who can deliver strength based group exercise classes for patients with cancer and other complex chronic conditions.

Main duties of the job

The service offers one-to-one assessments at the time of diagnosis, during which patients are prescribed a personalised pre-habilitation exercise programme, delivered by specialist trainers and physiotherapists. Programmes include a variety of activities; patients can choose from strength based circuits classes, Pilates, yoga, running, walking and online classes. Patients are followed-up regularly and continue on programmes throughout treatment and up to 6 months post-treatment.

The post holder will have experience as a fitness professional, supporting people with long term conditions, such as cancer. They will be able to work independently to plan and deliver sessions, drawing on the patient knowledge of service leads where appropriate. The post holder will have excellent communication skills, and contribute to the creation of a welcoming, friendly and fun environment. They will have an understanding of the wide healthcare and support service available to patients, and be able to deliver general healthy lifestyle advice.

About us

Cancer patients who are more physically active experience less fatigue, anxiety, depression and fewer sleep disturbances. Undertaking exercise is also known to reduce length of stay, postoperative complications and in some instances reduce the chance of cancer recurrence. Consequently, being able to support patients to become physically active before, during and following cancer treatment is a valuable tool. Active Against Cancer (AAC) is a unique service at the cutting edge of cancer care, which does just that!

The service is primarily run from a picturesque base at Harrogate Sports and Fitness Centre (HSFC), where peer support and social interaction between patients is actively encouraged! Active Against Cancer may in the future extend the service to the surrounding areas delivering classes from community hubs. Flexibility may be required to work both in Harrogate and the surrounding area.
