Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic consultant colleague to join an established team. The successful applicant will join three other Palliative Medicine Consultants in providing Specialist Palliative Care to the Harrogate and Rural Dales (HaRD) area (population approx. 160.000). The postholder will be employed by Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) with clinical work in Saint Michael's Hospice and the new Herriot Hospice @ The Lambert in Thirsk.

Main duties of the job

This post is 6.0 PAS. 1.5 PAs has been allocated to supporting professional activity time.

This post will be based mainly in the new Herriot Hospice @ The Lambert in Thirsk. The post holder will lead two ward rounds per week on the inpatient unit and chair the MDT.

The postholder will provide clinical leadership, diagnosis, management and treatment for patients with specialist palliative care needs; act as an expert resource for medical, nursing and other health care professionals and be an active champion of high quality palliative and end of life care (PEoLC) in the locality.

There will be opportunities to supervise and teach medical students, junior doctors and GP registrars. The post holder will have clinical governance responsibility and will contribute to the established audit programme.

Cross cover is provided for specialist palliative care consultant colleagues working in Harrogate hospital and community.

Saint Michael's Hospice is an established independent voluntary sector provider of a range of specialist and general palliative care services. The hospice itself is a 10 bedded specialist palliative care inpatient unit. A new 6 bed specialist unit in Thirsk is due to open in late 2023.

Experience

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC and licence to practice
  • Inclusion on the specialist register for Palliative Medicine or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at the time of interview
  • MRCP, MRCGP or equivalent
  • At least 4 years (WTE) post graduate experience in palliative medicine, some of which being in an acute hospital setting
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working

Desirable

  • Other higher degree or diploma e.g. MD, PhD
  • Experience of general medicine and other specialities such as oncology, care of the elderly and general practice
