We have an exciting opportunity to help you to access the career of your dreams. In collaboration with the Open University, we can now offer the chance for you to start and complete the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship.

We have 8 positions to offer with base areas in our adult community setting, as well as on our medical and surgical wards.

This work-based apprenticeship provides the opportunity to develop both professionally and academically in order to gain a BSc in adult nursing and register with the NMC as a qualified nurse.

This course will start February 2024.

The salary for this post will be based on Annexe 21 where you will be paid:

Year 1: 65% of top of Band 5 - £22,477 per annumYear 2: 70% of top of Band 5 - £24,206 per annumYear 3: 75% of top of Band 5 - £25,935 per annumUpon successful completion, the annual salary will be £28,407

Main duties of the job

As an apprentice nurse with HDFT you will complete your Nursing Degree Apprenticeship (RNDA) and qualify after three years, debt free, as a registered nurse.

As well as having your fees fully funded throughout the three years, you will also receive an apprentice salary.

As an apprentice you will be based, as a paid employee, within HDFT. Whilst you will be allocated to one specific area, you will experience working across a number of placements to gain an appreciation of the different areas of local healthcare services and meet the needs of the NMC requirements.

When you are not on placement, you will be allocated one study day per week, with the remaining 30 hours allocated to your work base as a HCSW.

During the education programme you will develop skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow you to work in today's dynamic and changing healthcare environment. You will be required to commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the education program within the contract period.

On successful completion of this programme, HDFT will offer you employment as a registered nurse and ask that you commit to a minimum of 18 months post qualification time at the organisation.

You will be supported through a 12 month preceptorship as you navigate through the role of a newly qualified nurse.

You will be supported by the Practice Education team throughout your training and be very much a part of the HDFT Team.

Duties of the role are as follows:

  • To work as a member of the Multi disciplinary team and to provide specialised nursing care for surgical inpatients. This requires detailed knowledge of equipment and specialised information on procedures undertaken in the surgical ward environments
  • In consultation with senior staff, the post holder will help plan, co-ordinate, implement, and evaluate care for patients.
  • Maintain standards in accordance with ward /Trust policies and procedures and NMC code of conduct
  • Maintain a safe working environment, being aware of the necessity to comply with Health & Safety regulations and the Environmental Health Act, and to attend mandatory training courses.
  • Maintain safe custody of all drugs and medicines and when trained demonstrate the manipulation, dexterity and co-ordination of IV drugs.
