Main duties of the job

From August 2021, there is a 12-month opportunity to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team order to support and help to provide a comprehensive Emergency medicine service within the Trust. These clinical fellow posts will have a 4-hour time allowance each week for the successful applicants to develop an area of special interest within the Emergency department. The areas to develop would be a choice from the following: simulation, education, teaching & training, IT, research, quality improvement, ultrasound or medical student supervision & training.

You would be able to develop a project of your choice, within one of the areas of interest in conjunction with a supervisor over the course of the year.

About us

The Emergency department is small & friendly & we see in the region of 55,000 new patients per year. This includes adults and children. The medical staffing consists of 6 WTE consultants, 14 middle grade doctors (Specialty doctors and Specialty trainees), and 11 other doctors below specialty level (including 2 F2 posts) and 2 F1 doctors.

There are also Advanced care practitioners & Emergency Nurse Practitioners within the department. Senior staff are in the department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with consultant direct support and supervision on each of the 7 days. There is a trauma team for major trauma. Shop floor teaching and support is an active component of the daily work of the middle grade and senior staff.

  • To undertake the initial assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in the Emergency Department (ED)
  • Contribute to audit and other quality improvement projects
  • To facilitate safe discharge or onward referral of these patients from the ED
  • Participate in and contribute towards the training of colleagues, students and other health care professionals
  • Ensure accurate and complete documentation as undertaken for all patient records in line with Trust protocol. This includes the coding of clinical information in the ED documentation.
