Job summary

As a Maternity Support Worker, you'll play an essential role in supporting women, birthing individuals, and their families throughout their maternity journey. Working closely with midwives and the wider healthcare team, you'll help provide safe, compassionate, and holistic care across antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and community settings.

You'll bring empathy, reliability, and a genuine passion for making a difference for women and their families. We'll provide the training and support you need to grow your skills and confidence, while you help us deliver the highest standard of woman-centred care.

Main duties of the job

Maternity Support Workers (MSW) assist with caring for women, birthing individuals, newborn infants and their families throughout their maternity journey, working under supervision and within agreed guidelines and protocols when providing care to women and their families.The primary role of the MSW is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to woman-centered care.The midwife is ultimately responsible for the care of the mother and her new-born(s), and it is under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife that the MSW assists with and provides care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training. The employee will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. These settings include antenatal inpatient or outpatient care, intrapartum inpatient care, postnatal inpatient and outpatient care and community.

Qualifications and skills

Essential

  • Level 4 Maternity Support Worker Development Module (or equivalent - must be maternity specific module at level 4)
  • Both Maths and English GCSE Grade 4/C or equivalent Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications, with effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic IT skills to digitally record observations and use applications such as email CPD and localised maternity records/systems

Desirable

  • Level 3 Healthcare related qualification e.g. BTEC, NVQ, T-level, apprenticeship

Experience and knowledge

Essential

  • At least 1 years previous clinical experience in a Healthcare Support Worker role, preferably in a paediatric or maternity setting

Desirable

  • Awareness of safeguarding (adults and children)
  • Experience of breastfeeding support
