Job summary

The Scarborough, Hull and York Pathology Service (SHYPS) is seeking a suitably qualified HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to work in our busy, friendly, Immunology Laboratories at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Based in Hull, your role will be to carry out analytical tests in the new regional Immunology laboratories. Rotating through all sections of the department under the supervision of a Senior Biomedical Scientist. You will get the opportunity to work in our autoimmune, immunochemistry, flow cytometry and allergy laboratories. We are looking for an individual who is hard working, innovative, sociable, and works well as part of a team.

To qualify for the Biomedical Scientist role applicants must be registered with the HCPC. Previous work experience in NHS Immunology laboratory is highly desirable.

The Immunology Laboratory is based in a purpose built facility at Hull Royal Infirmary that forms part of an integrated Blood Sciences service within The Scarborough Hull and York Pathology Service. The department provides a wide-ranging laboratory service to primary and secondary care.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform work according to Standrad Operating Procedures and departmental Quality Assurance Policy in order to provide an accurate and timely service to the users.
  • Carry out the analysis of patient samples, report results and provide interpretive advice as appropriate.
  • Ensure that reagents are prepared, stored and used according to manufacturer guidelines andlaboratory protocols.
  • Use and maintain highly specialist scientific instruments for the diagnosis and monitoring of disease.
  • Take corrective actions when quality control or other assurance procedures indicate deviations from correct performance of the laboratory instruments or methods.
  • First line troubleshooting of analytical equipment or methods and participate in the resolution of analytical issues.
  • Perform routine stock checks of reagents and consumables and maintain sufficient stocks.
  • Perform audits and verification processes as directed by the senior biomedical and clinical scientists according to ISO15189 standards.
