Senior Medical & Ophthalmic Photographer

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced Medical & Ophthalmic Photographer to join our expanding team at York Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced department in a diverse role. Supporting a range of clinical specialities, whilst also overseeing and developing our existing Ophthalmic Imaging team. This is a varied position which requires clinical tasks to be undertaken alongside management work so the successful applicant would desirably have experience in line management along with strong prioritisation and time management skills.

The main base of this role is at York Hospital, with travel to York Community Stadium as required. The postholder will work alongside an experienced Senior Medical & Ophthalmic Photographer at York to share line management duties of the current team, consisting of eight band 4 Ophthalmic Imaging Technicians and one band 5 Ophthalmic Photographer.

The successful applicant will have a recognised relevant qualification or equivalent experience in clinical photography and be a registered with the Academy for Healthcare Science (or registerable). If the PgCert in Clinical Photography is not yet obtained, a willingness to undertake this course is essential.The successful applicant will possess strong technical skills, using their experience and judgment to achieve the most accurate photographs for each condition. Leadership and change management experience would be beneficial.

Main duties of the job

  • Running a medical photography service in accordance with IMI guidelines and regulations such as Data Protection Act 2018. This includes providing clinical and non-clinical photographs and videos using a DSLR for patient records, clinical trials, legal work, teaching and publication.
  • Photograph a range of conditions of inpatients on the wards or in Theatre and outpatients in the studio from many specialties, such as Tissue viability, ENT and Dermatology.
  • Line managing and developing a small, established team of Ophthalmic Imaging Technicians and an Ophthalmic Photographer.
  • Ensuring management tasks are dealt with in a timely manner and with a good attention to detail e.g. rota, appraisals, absence management, payroll etc.
  • Undertaking specialist Ophthalmic Imaging procedures including OCT, fundus photography, Fluorescein Angiography, anterior segment photography, extra-ocular imaging and other advanced techniques.
  • Delivering training and mentorship to staff to support professional growth and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • Consistently ensuring compliance with data protection, consent and confidentiality standards in line with national guidelines and local policies.

The ideal applicant will be an experienced, personable and passionate Ophthalmic and Medical Photographer. They will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver tailored patient care under a variety of conditions which may sometimes be distressing.
