Job summary

We are looking to expand our friendly team and are looking for someone with good secretarial experience to join the Stroke Services Team at York Teaching Hospital. You will provide support to the Medical Secretary, the Stroke Consultants and Stroke Nurses.

Excellent administration/secretarial skills and audio-typing qualifications are vital, as well as a good understanding of customer/patient relations. You will be required to deal with telephone queries from patients, consultants and GPs, book urgent referrals into our daily TIA clinic and manage a very busy and at times challenging workload.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for audio typing clinical and administrative letters, booking in both urgent and follow up appointments, answering telephone enquiries and dealing with patient queries, as well as covering the Medical Secretary during periods of absence.

The successful candidate will be required to have good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise the demands of an extremely busy office and manage their time and workload effectively.

They will also be required to work unsupervised and communicate with Consultants on a regular basis. Audio-typing qualifications are essential and a knowledge of medical terminology would be an advantage.

  • Word processing skills - OCR II (or equivalent e.g. RSA II)
  • Typing skills OCR II ( or equivalent e.g. RSA II)

  • Qualification or appropriate training in customer service
  • ECDL

Experience

  • Minimum 6 months secretarial/administrative experience
  • Experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
  • Experience of working in a customer focused environment
