Job summary

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic Optometrists to join the Ophthalmology Unit at York Hospital in a newly created role designed to support the New Patient Cataract and Urgent Referral Services.

This is an exciting opportunity for successful candidates to further develop their specialist skills throughextended roles and to support services currently provided by Ophthalmologists.

The role involves the assessment of new patients attending the Cataract Service, prior to listing for surgery.

The role also involves assessment and management of new and follow up patients attending the Urgent referral clinics. These clinics provide an emergency service for acute conditions and therefore present a diverse and varied range of ophthalmological conditions.

The successful candidates will be required to work on Thursday's and Fridays and will join a multidisciplinary team consisting of Ophthalmologists, Optometrist's, Orthoptists, Nursing staff and Imaging staff . Training will be provided for the role but successful candidate's must have an Independent Prescriber Qualification.

Main duties of the job

URC Clinic

  • To work alongside Ophthalmologists in Consultant led Urgent Referral Clinics.
  • To undertake a specialist extended clinical role, in the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients attending URC. These clinics require the application of advanced knowledge in a range of Ocular pathologies and Ocular Therapeutics.
  • To initiate treatment and prescribe relevant medications.
  • To provide highly specialised advice contributing to the diagnosis, management, education of patients attending the Urgent Referral Clinics .

Cataract Clinics

  • To work alongside Ophthalmologists in a Consultant led Cataract Service.
  • To undertake a specialist extended clinical optometry role, in the diagnosis and management of patients with Cataracts. The duties will include detailed assessment of fundus and media, refractive state, biometry, and OCT if indicated. These clinics require the application of advanced knowledge of Cataracts, refraction and their management.
  • To provide highly specialised advice contributing to the diagnosis, management, education of patients attending the Cataract Service
  • Detailed discussion with patients with respect to planned refractive. outcomes in order to agree refractive outcomes of planned treatment
  • Undertaking informed consent to include benefits and risks attached to the proposed surgery.

The Post Holder must have a Non-Medical Prescriber Qualification to meet the needs of this post
