Job description

Job responsibilities

The GI Surgery unit of YTH is active in research and has many in-house projects including that of FIT testing in colorectal cancer. The unit recruits to many national & international trials. The department has established links with the University of York and novel research work on aspects of colorectal cancer based within the university laboratory has commenced. The collaborative project involves characterisation of sodium channels as a novel biomarker in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. The pilot phase of this research has begun in November 2020.

The post holder will have fantastic opportunity to be involved in both clinical and laboratory based research. Laboratory training will be provided to undertake the research. Depending on progress and output from the project, there may be opportunity for the candidate to complete and obtain a basic research degree as part of the project. The appointee will be expected to generate both presentations (at regional and national level) and publications in peer-reviewed journals from their research output.

Outside the laboratory, the post holder will also have the opportunity to enhance their acute clinical experience as they will be participating in the CT rota in General Surgery. Exposure to elective theatres is possible. The post will entail a combination of academic and clinical work at CT level with an approximately 30:70 split subject to review based on progress of the research work. The post holder will provide general surgery on call cover at CT level. The on-call rota will be 1:9. This is split into 2 shifts 8am until 8pm and then a separate shift of 8pm-8am. On call is supported at all times by the surgical registrar.

The duration of the post is for 12 months but this can be extended for suitable candidates. The appointee will be closely supervised by consultant surgeons (with clinical and research experience) and senior lecturers (with laboratory and research experience) at YTH and the University of York respectively.

York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (YTHNFT) is part of the joint undergraduate Hull and York Medical School (HYMS) with partners the University of York, University of Hull and Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. YTHNFT have Post Graduate Medical Centres on both the main sites in York and Scarborough, with up to date audiovisual equipment. YTHNFT recognises the importance of continuing professional development and supports medical staff. There are good Medical and Nursing libraries available on both hospital sites. A permanent librarian is available and literature searches and reference articles are easily obtained. The library at York has close links with the library services at the University of York as well as the University of York St John.

The post holder will be expected to keep themselves up to date with current knowledge and practice, to attend clinical meetings & teaching sessions within the department and to participate in audit & in-service training of other healthcare professionals. The post holder will be required to deputise for absent colleagues from time to time and to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. The post holder will also be required to be available exceptionally for such irregular commitments outside normal rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
