Job summary
York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals are looking for an experienced and dynamic anaesthetist to work as a Specialist within our hospitals. This is a new role designed for senior doctors who are competent and comfortable to work independently both in, and out of, normal daytime hours. The post has been set up to replicate the way of working of our current Consultant body, in recognition of the fact that many senior, non-Consultant, anaesthetists are already effectively working at this level. We hope that this exciting opportunity will provide the challenge, recognition and remuneration, that the successful applicant deserves.
We are a department of 60 Consultants and 16 SAS doctors and are now looking for Specialists in Anaesthesia s to join our dynamic and rapidly evolving anaesthetic team at York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. A wide range of specialist interests can be accommodated including (but not limited to) simulation, obstetric anaesthesia, vascular anaesthesia, anaesthesia for major general surgery, chronic pain, regional anaesthesia, day case and also teaching and research.
Surgical services are located principally at two acute hospitals based at York and Scarborough and some elective surgery is also located at Bridlington Hospital.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will work as part of the senior anaesthetic team, providing anaesthetic services across all of the Trust's main sites- York, Scarborough and Bridlington. As a Specialist it is expected that the post-holder will undertake clinical duties independently, and act at the level of an RCoA sessional supervisor when required. The post-holder will be expected to be able to supervise and support Junior Doctors working in anaesthesia.
On-call duties
Regardless of base hospital, the post holder will be expected to contribute to the on-call rota for Scarborough Hospital between the hours of 1800 and 0800, 7 days per week. On-call duties as a senior anaesthetist on call in Scarborough are non-resident overnight, but require the Doctor to reside within 30 minutes of the hospital. Accommodation may be available depending on circumstances and the post-holders base hospital.
The on-call duty has the opportunity for the selection of two different patterns of working. This pattern will be dependent on the individual post-holder's wishes, capabilities and previous anaesthetic experience. We would support candidates who wish to change their pattern of working once in post (from pattern 1 to 2) to enable career progression. We will preferentially appoint candidates who are already prepared to work Pattern 2 or who are keen to work towards this. Please see the job pack for further details.
