JOB SUMMARY/ PURPOSE:

please note this role is a Band 3 turning to a Band 5 after successful completion of training

The post holder, through training and development of skills, will be involved in the provision of an efficient, high-quality mortuary and autopsy service to York Hospital Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (York, Scarborough and Bridlington Hospital Mortuaries) and local Coroner's Services in line with current legislation. The post holder will assist in the provision of a viewing service for bereaved relatives in a supportive and caring environment. The post holder will maintain effective communications with consultant medical staff and appropriate laboratory staff on operational matters within the Mortuary.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a busy, innovative Mortuary Service as a Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologist.

The post holder will perform a wide range of tasks to support Senior Anatomical Technologists in the provision of an efficient and effective Mortuary service.

These tasks will include patient reception and release duties, handling telephone queries, facilitating viewings, assisting in the preparation of patients for post-mortem examination and various other technical and clerical roles.

As a trainee you will also be expected to learn both theoretical and practical aspects of being an APT through both shadowing and observing senior staff members as well as self-study and course study, eventually obtaining the RSPH Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology.

Essential

  • Entry requirements for the Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology and Technology awarded by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). The Association of Anatomical Pathology Technology recommends a minimum of 5 passes at GCSE level AC or equivalent, to include English, Maths and a science (preferably Biology)

Desirable

  • Any relevant further qualifications.

Experience & Knowledge Required

Essential

  • Relevant healthcare experience or equivalent (funeral services etc.)

Desirable

  • Experience in Mortuary work
