Job summary

York Emergency Department is currently undergoing an exciting £18 million development to offer high quality modern facilities designed to create the best care for our patients.

The development will see the creation of a new Emergency Floor, incorporating the Emergency Department & Emergency Assessment Unit - including a modern 8 bay resus area. The Emergency Floor will be operating under a new clinical model, focusing on up front senior assessment and specialty review ensuring patients receive timely emergency care and early specialty review. This new clinical model provides exciting opportunities for Specialty Doctors to receive a high level of support from senior colleagues as well as supporting junior colleagues whilst being given the exposure to a wide range of Emergency Medicine presentations.

The Emergency Department is launching a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) programme in Emergency Medicine in 2023. Successful candidates will be considered for this programme commencing in August 2023 with an annual recruitment onto the programme providing our doctors an exciting development opportunity at all junior levels (See attached document).

Main duties of the job

We welcome candidates who have chosen a career in Emergency Medicine. The Specialty Doctor post offers and exciting opportunity to further develop their career in Emergency Medicine.

Plans are in place to move to self-rostering in 2023, offering our doctors greater flexibility and choice, enabling greater control over their rosters, and allowing improvement in individuals work-life balance. The current Rota is a 15-week rolling Rota consisting of day, evening & night shifts.

We have a great team consisting of Trust grade tier doctors, deanery rotations (FY1, FY2, ST1-ST6, ACCS, GPSTR and Junior Clinical Fellows) plus specialty doctors, associate specialists, and consultants. We also have a fantastic team of EMP's & ACP's.

You will have excellent shop floor support from enthusiastic senior and middle grade doctors and the Rota is carefully designed to minimise fatigue, with night shifts being a maximum of four shifts in a row and nearly all day shifts are capped at 8 hours.

About us

As part of the development of a new ED, along with that comes the implementation of a new clinical model, focussing on up front senior assessment in the Emergency Department. As a Specialty Doctor, you will be leading a small assessment team consisting of a middle-grade doctor, a trust grade doctor, a nurse and a HCA. This model provides an exciting opportunity for intensive support from senior colleagues. You will work as Emergency Physician in Charge on nights, providing support to Junior colleagues and working with the Senior Nurse in the running of the Department. Consultant support over night is provided by an on-call service.
