Job summary

A vacancy has arisen at the Biochemistry department at Hull Royal Infirmary for a Biomedical Scientist with HCPC registration. We will also consider those working towards their HCPC registration who have an IBMS accredited degree, or who are in the last year of their degree and have completed their IBMS registration portfolio.

The department is fully equipped with the Beckman Coulter track system to the Beckman AU5800 Chemistry and DXi immunoassay analysers.

The department also has a Specialist testing section including Trace metals analysis, Tandem mass spectrometry, HPLC and Menarini 9210 analysers.

It will be a contractual requirement for the successful candidate to participate in the 24/7 shift system.

In addition, as an IBMS approved training laboratory we encourage and support all Band 5 staff to obtain the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Science. For Band 6 staff, we encourage and support staff in achieving IBMS Higher Specialist Diplomas and MSc courses to enable career progression.

The Laboratory is UKAS accredited.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out the analysis of patient samples, quality controls (QC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
  • To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
  • Technical validation of patient results.
  • Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on information of a technical nature.
  • To undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work. This will involve working mostly alone and includes the provisional authorisation of results that are used for immediate patient management, carrying potentially serious consequences if any errors occur in the process.
