Job summary

If you are an enthusiastic and highly motivated Registered Nurse with excellent communication and leadership skills, who has a proven interest in management of people with diabetes in an inpatient setting, then this is the post for you.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DISN) to join the multi-disciplinary Diabetes Team based at York Hospital.

The post holder will be required to support the multi-disciplinary Diabetes Team in the management of people with diabetes while an inpatient in York Hospital.

Candidates will be expected to be able to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of the current clinical and professional issues affecting people with diabetes, incorporating high quality evidence in patient centered care. Additionally, they will demonstrate competency in teaching (patients and healthcare professionals), supervision of team members and sharing good practice.

The ability to be flexible, creative and adaptable are key personal attributes.

Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams is essential, while a post registration qualification in diabetes would be ideal.

Main duties of the job

There is much emphasis on patient empowerment for self-efficacy in the management of long-term conditions, and therefore the post holder will require excellent interpersonal skills. They will need to be able to motivate and lead others and act as an effective role model.

  • Maintain a high standard of patient focused care in accordance with York & Scarbrorough Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies
  • Act as a role model for the development of clinical skills and knowledge within the ward team
  • Support the lead in-patient diabetes specialist nurse in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care
  • Provide assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for patients, ensuring written records are kept
  • In conjunction with the in-patient diabetes specialist Nurse ensure management of clinical services
  • Contribute to the promotion of a positive learning environment within the clinical area
  • Participate in preceptorship and mentorship programmes
  • Undertake continuous professional and clinical development
  • Support the clinical teams in the management and delivery of in-patient diabetes care
  • Manage liaison between clinical teams where necessary to ensure the best management of highly complex in-patients with diabetes
  • Support the lead in-patient diabetes specialist Nurse in investigating and responding to accidents, complaints etc.
  • Deputise for Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse in her/his absence
