Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Rheumatologist at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative professional to join a growing team of Rheumatologists with varying interests and skills to enhance and develop our current service provision.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include Rheumatology outpatient clinics and ward care, with no on-call commitments.

The team prides itself on providing comprehensive, high quality Rheumatology care and good multidisciplinary team working. The Trust is keen to develop an outstanding Rheumatology service and is looking for a highly motivated and innovative physician to supplement the present team.

The post will be for 10 Programmed Activities. The predominant base for this post will be Bedford Hospital, though some clinic activity will be provided at Luton.

Teaching and development of medical students and trainees is an integral part of the role as well as participation in research and audit activities in the department. Duties may also include teaching, lectures or workshops for other departments, nurses, GPs and others.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The appointee will join the well-established department of eight existing full time consultants in rheumatology. The successful candidate will augment and complement the consultant capacity, to help drive forwards the departments vision of a comprehensive rheumatology service. Sub-specialty interest in any area appropriate for a DGH (such as vasculitis or bone health) is welcomed, as is an enthusiasm for teaching, audit and research.

Weekly work commitments will be influenced by the Royal College of Physicians recommendations, the consultant contract and specified in the Job Plan. The senior rheumatologists in the department will act as the mentor for the new consultant, along with the other consultants in their absence. However, the department enjoys a very close working relationship and all clinical issues are openly discussed at formal and informal meetings.

The allocation of programmed activities will be based on 8.5 for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting professional activities. The detailed job plan will be agreed in consultation with the Clinical Director and the Consultants in the Department, with the approval of the Medical Director and Chief Executive or his/ her representative.

The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it will provide personal objectives, including details of links to wider service objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

The pattern of work may change in the future to meet local changing needs and annual review meetings will take place in line with the new Consultant Contract, job planning and appraisal arrangements.
