Job summary

Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant with an interest in therapeutic endoscopy including ERCP / EUS and Bowel Cancer Screening (BCSP), to join our team of Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This post will be cross site and is the first cross site role to be implemented, based in Luton for acute gastroenterology, out of hours endoscopy and BCSP and at Bedford for ERCP/EUS lists.

This is an exciting time to be joining BHFT which was formed in April 2020 with the merger of Bedford Hospital and the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital. Our integration strategy is well developed and seeks to provide the best experience for staff and the patients we care for.

Both endoscopy units have held JAG accreditation since 2009.

The Luton endoscopy unit is fully equipped with Pentax equipment with a recent procurement of Olympus nasal endoscopy stack and scopes.

The Bedford endoscopy unit has 5 endoscopy rooms including a room with XR screening in the department and is equipped with Olympus equipment.

To arrange a visit please contact Clinical Director for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy on 01234 355122 ext 2300 or email: Jacquelyn.Harvey@bedfordhospital.nhs.uk.

Main duties of the job

This post includes a commitment to inpatient gastroenterology, including speciality advice across the hospital and to the GI bleed rota. There is no general medicine on-call commitment in this post. Consultants with ward duties spend blocks of two or three weeks looking after patients on ward 11 with daily input to the wards and cancellation of most elective activity. This role will work closely with other consultants to ensure continuity of services to meet national requirements. There are considerable plans under development to enhance ambulatory pathways for patients with gastrointestinal disease.

We offer a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy / colonoscopy / nasal endoscopy/ ERCP and General Anaesthesia lists in the department. Emergency therapeutic work can be carried out with good support from colleagues in radiology. Non-emergency endoscopy is provided 7 days per week. An ERCP MDT has recently been implemented and there are MDTs in place for HPB, Upper GI, Lower GI, CUP, IBD, Hepatology and Benign pathology.

A 24 hour GI bleed service has been in place since 2011. There are 10 endoscopists on the emergency rota.

This post supports urgent weekend gastroenterology input to newly admitted patients and to existing gastroenterology patients on ward 11.
