Job summary
We are looking for a locum consultant surgeon with an interest in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery.
The appointee will be an experienced laparoscopic surgeon and will share the caseload of colorectal surgery, together with supporting the general and colorectal clinics and MDTs for our patients.
The appointee will be encouraged and supported in developing their own specialty interests in colorectal within the overall job plan depending on the interest of the candidate and the needs of the service.
This is a fixed term contract post for 12 months from point of start date, with a full working week of DCC commitments. We will recruit substantively to this post in 2026.
This is a replacement post to join our surgical on-call team of a frequency of 1:8.
Main duties of the job
Key duties will include:
Supervising and running outpatient clinics, operating lists (independent and in a supporting role for more complex cases)
Taking part in the weekly Colorectal MDT.
Endoscopy lists if JAG accredited or working towards accreditation.
Care for patients on wards in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, including ward nurses and our wider acute team.
Emergency work: Consultant General Surgery on-call of 1 in 8 schedule.
You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council.

The post holder will work with the Lower GI team in the Colorectal service and will support Clinical Governance and the Colorectal Cancer and Benign Gastro Multi-disciplinary team. They will attend colorectal theatres, colorectal clinics and diagnostic endoscopy.
The post holder will work with the colorectal surgeons to provide post-operative care including returns to theatre if there are complications.
The post holder will be ultimately responsible to the Clinical Director.
The proposed timetable will be discussed with applicants. This will need to be changed from time to time to respond to the demands of the service.
In case of difficulties of any kind, the post holder will seek the advice of the appropriate consultant.
Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all colorectal and general surgical patients.
To work closely with General Surgery department in the management of General Surgery patients requiring admission
Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.
Participation in the emergency on-call rotas.

A 10 PA week consists of 8.5 PAs direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activity (SPA).

Job planning will be used to reflect the needs of the department, ensuring that contracted work is appropriately remunerated. An initial job plan review will be undertaken by the Clinical Director after 3 months and annually thereafter, or if the work pattern changes.
