Job summary

Applications are invited for the above full time post for this 660 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. This appointment will be made in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England) 2002.

The appointee will work as part of the General Medicine Team. The appointee will have MBBS or equivalent, a Certificate of Completion of Basic Medical Training or equivalent, completed FY1 and FY2 or equivalent along with at least six months experience of working within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Fellow will be supervised by the Specialty Registrar, Senior Clinical Fellows, Specialty Doctors and Consultants. He/she will work in close liaison with the multidisciplinary team involved with rehabilitation of patients; write discharge summaries; participate in on-take duties and attend out-patient clinics, etc.

Whilst in the General Medicine specialties, the Clinical Fellow will:

  • be required to provide a CMT/ST1-2 level of staffing for the department
  • attend ward & board rounds both with the Consultants and with the Specialty Doctor and other Training Doctors / Foundation Year 2 doctors.
  • work under the supervision of and be responsible to his/her respective consultant, or the on call consultant and, ultimately the Clinical Director
  • support educational development of junior clinical fellows (FY1 & FY2 equivalent).
  • review patients already seen by a more junior member of the team - as requested / required
  • provide expertise & supervision for junior clinical fellows on medical management of complex admissions
  • identify issues with ward based care pathways and contribute to quality improvement initiatives to rectify
  • in case of difficulties of any kind, the Doctor will seek the advice of the appropriate consultant. The Doctor is not expected to participate in any work beyond their level of expertise.

Job responsibilities

This post would have all the training elements of the current Trainees programme with opportunities where available to support outpatient clinics whereby they have a specialty interest. The post holder would be encouraged to participate in audits / research with allocated time in their time table. She/he would have access to all our Library facilities. He / she would be entitled to study leave as prescribed by the deanery. She/he would have an allocated Educational Supervisor for all e portfolio activities.

The postholder will be given a PDP folder by the Medical Centre staff which you should discuss with your educational supervisor at the beginning of your post.

The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (L&D) has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. The Hospital has an excellent track record of financial and senior executive stability.
