Ward 21 is a 28 bedded Gastroenterology Specialist unit which accommodates male and female inpatients, caring for patients with a range of gastroenterological and general medical conditions. Our patients are admitted as emergencies via our Accident and Emergency department, our Emergency Assessment Unit and patients that require our specialist care from other wards.

Our patients require a great deal of physical, psychological and emotional support alongside careful management of their complex nursing care and medical needs. Main duties of the job

To carry out all relevant forms of care under supervision and when proficient demonstrate procedures of care; supervise junior qualified and / or unqualified staff including student nurses whilst maintaining a safe working environment.

To work closely with the department / nurse in chargeand multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care, staff and servicedevelopment within the department / ward environment. Appropriate monitoring and escalation of the deteriorating patient to help facilitate early intervention.

Assess, plan and implement care to the acute emergency patients including their Risk assessments and implement care to reduce pressure damage and falls on the unit. Good and clear communication skills are necessary for this post as you will be required to manage a group of groups whilst liaising with your team and doctors to provide a high standard of nursing practice.

The post holder will provide a high standard of nursing care by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating inpatient care. To work closely with the shift leader, department / ward manager and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of nursing care, staff and service development within the department / ward environment.

Safe administration of specialist medications for our IBD patients training provided on the ward by Specialist nurses and including sign off sheets for competencies. The opportunity to learn safe administration of Total Parental Nutrition [TPN] for our patients that require enteral support on the ward and the accomplishment of competencies alongside.

The chance to insert Nasogastric tubes for feeding and aspiration and in turn this is helped supported by a competency booklet and study days. Responsible for the management of patient's drains, the documentation and removal of drains on instruction. Ensure good documentation of enteral fluids and strict output.

  • Assess patient care needs and the development and implementation of programmes of patient care and participate in the evaluation of these.
  • To ensure a high standard of nursing care is performed at all times and assist in the review and regular update of these standards.
  • Ability to recognise and respond appropriately to changes in the patients condition and safety.
  • Adhere to all Trust Policies to maintain professional, clinical and patient safety.
  • Ability to administer oral drugs safely and independently and that they are administered in line with the NMC and Trust Policy guidelines.
